COURSE CURRICULUM

The Music Production course provides a practical and theoretical foundation for developing your creative and technical abilities in composition, recording, sound technology, and the broader music industry. In Year 1, you begin with modules like Composition, where you learn how to generate and communicate musical ideas through notation and digital tools for performance and studio work. Electronic Music Techniques and Popular Music Studies introduce the fundamentals of genre and production styles, offering insights into both technical execution and cultural context. Sound Technology and Creative Studio Techniques lay the groundwork for your audio engineering skills, focusing on acoustic principles, human hearing, signal flow, and the use of digital audio workstations. In the Audio Production Portfolio module, you explore analogue and digital systems through hands-on mini projects, developing the skills necessary for non-studio-based production work. These modules collectively prepare you for deeper exploration in your second year. Year 2 includes a critical analysis of historical and contemporary production techniques, helping you understand how evolving cultural and technological influences shape modern music production. The Level 5 Project gives you the opportunity to respond to themed briefs, often in collaboration with peers across the School of Arts, fostering teamwork and interdisciplinary practice. In The Music Industries module, you examine the current state of the music business, including digital consumption models and career pathways. Creative Studio Production advances your ability to plan, record, mix, and evaluate professional studio projects. Contemporary Music Making continues to enhance your creative identity through collaborative and solo work. In the final year, the Project Proposal and Major Project modules enable you to develop an independent creative or research-led project supported by tutorials and peer feedback, including maintaining a digital reflective journal. Mixing Practice provides advanced training in professional mixing, including sessions with industry professionals to refine your technical and critical listening abilities. This well-rounded curriculum equips you for a variety of roles in the music and audio industries.
