COURSE CURRICULUM

This Media and Cultural Studies program provides a well-rounded exploration of media's role in society, culture, and communication, combining academic theory with practical skills development.In year 1, students begin by investigating key themes such as social media, sound, identity, and television. Modules like Understanding Social Media and Culture, Media and Society introduce the impact of media on communication, identity, and culture. Cinematic Identities focuses on how American cinema portrays gender, race, and class, offering students a critical lens through which to analyze representation. Researching Television teaches key methods for analyzing both the content and consumption of TV, while Sound Studies expands students' awareness of audio in media contexts.Year 2 deepens the critical and historical knowledge base. Media: Past and Present explores how media has developed over time and across different global contexts. Media Theory exposes students to foundational thinkers and ideas, giving them tools to critically engage with media texts and practices. Popular Music and the Moving Image analyzes the relationship between music and visual culture, from cinema to advertising. Researching Media and Culture provides hands-on training in research methods, while Content Creators focuses on storytelling and media production across platforms, helping students think critically about the content they produce.In the final year, students undertake either a Dissertation or an Extended Project. These independent projects allow for in-depth study on a topic of their choice, integrating theory, research, and possibly creative practice. This final stage helps students showcase their skills and understanding in preparation for careers in media, communications, or further academic study.
