COURSE CURRICULUM
The Human Geography course offers a rich exploration of how people interact with place, space, and environment across different scales and contexts. In Year 1, you'll build foundational knowledge and practical skills through a diverse set of modules. Sustainable Urbanism & European Field Trip introduces the principles of sustainable development and gives you the opportunity to witness these in practice during a visit to a European city. Geography in the Contemporary World uses case studies from current events to show how geographical thinking is vital for interpreting complex global issues. Contested Geographies delves into the power dynamics of space, identity, and territory, while City & Society explores how urban environments are shaped by policies at various levels. Geographies of Diversity examines the lived experiences of different social groups, addressing both the vibrancy and challenges of multicultural urban life. Techniques in Geographical Research equips you with practical research and analytical tools, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), to apply in fieldwork and academic projects. In Year 2, the Work Placement & Employability Skills module allows you to spend ten weeks gaining hands-on experience with a local employer, helping you apply your academic learning to real-world challenges and develop crucial career skills. Research Methods builds your capabilities in both qualitative and quantitative research, preparing you for your final year dissertation. Alternative Economic Geographies focuses on themes like globalisation and spatial inequality, while Development of Geographical Thought traces how human geography has evolved over time. The International Field Trip further enhances your global awareness by exposing you to urban planning responses in different cultural and political contexts. Natural Hazard Management & Climate Adaptation introduces key concepts in environmental risk and resilience through theory and fieldwork. Social Justice challenges you to understand the geographic dimensions of inequality and how policy can either reinforce or alleviate spatial exclusion. In your Final Year, you will undertake a Dissertation—a major research project that allows you to apply your knowledge and methodological skills to a geographical issue of your choice, showcasing your academic and analytical strengths.
