COURSE CURRICULUM

The Urban Planning and Geography program offers a comprehensive exploration of urbanism, geography, and planning principles. In the first year, students are introduced to Sustainable Urbanism, focusing on sustainability development and climate change, as well as evaluating European cities for sustainable practices. Geography in the Contemporary World helps students connect geographical theories to real-world events, while Introduction to Planning provides insight into the legal and institutional framework of spatial planning. Academic Skills for Geographers & Planners is designed to develop essential study and employability skills. The City & Society module examines the impact of global and local urban policies on city development, while Placemaking allows students to design a masterplan for the sustainable regeneration of a settlement. Techniques in Geographical Research teaches essential research methods, including GIS, through fieldwork projects, and continues with another semester of Academic Skills to ensure students are well-prepared for their future careers.In the second year, students gain professional experience through Placement & Employability Skills, spending ten weeks working with a local employer. Research Methods enables students to understand theoretical and practical research methods used in the social sciences. The Energy & Environmental Policy module explores tools for evaluating environmental policies and regulations, while Development of Planning Thought provides a theoretical reflection on spatial planning. The International Field Trip offers hands-on learning about urban challenges and solutions both in the UK and internationally. Students further their knowledge in Urban Design, focusing on the principles and impact of designing sustainable, quality places, and Housing Markets, where they evaluate housing delivery strategies in relation to market dynamics and human well-being.The final year emphasizes independent research with the Dissertation module, offering students the opportunity to conduct in-depth research on issues related to human geography and planning. Planning Policy & Practice builds an understanding of the planner’s role within the policy-making system, while Inter-Professional Studies allows students to collaborate with peers from various disciplines to generate redevelopment proposals for prominent sites. This structure provides students with a solid foundation for a career in urban planning, policy, or related fields.
