COURSE CURRICULUM

The History program offers a thorough exploration of European and global history, with a focus on the major social, political, and cultural developments that have shaped the modern world. It covers a range of historical topics, from the Enlightenment to the modern-day, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the key events and forces that have influenced Europe and beyond.In Year 1, you will explore foundational topics such as the Emergence of Modern Europe, where you will study the major developments that helped shape the modern European world. This includes the Enlightenment, political and industrial revolutions, and changing social structures. You will also examine Europe's relationships with the rest of the world in the Trade, Colonisation & Empire module, which focuses on Europe's colonial expansion and the creation of vast empires.The Society & Culture in Modern Britain module will delve into the key social and cultural changes in Britain from 1780-1914, examining urbanisation, class structures, popular culture, and social reform. Century of Conflict: War & Peace in Europe, 1914-c.2000 will provide you with an introduction to the impact of the two world wars, the rise of totalitarian regimes, and the efforts at peace-making in Europe during the 20th century. Migration & Cultural Encounters will focus on the history of relocation and migration, from the early voyages of exploration to modern political conflicts. The Public & the Past module will offer insight into the role of historians and the use of historical knowledge in public spaces such as heritage sites and television.In Year 2, the History: Theory & Practice module will introduce you to different historiographical approaches and support you in developing your own dissertation proposal. This is a crucial part of preparing for your final year research project.In the Final Year, you will complete a Dissertation that allows you to explore a specific area of history that interests you in depth, demonstrating the skills, knowledge, and competencies you have developed throughout the course.This History degree provides students with a deep understanding of key historical events, as well as the research and analytical skills required to investigate the past. It is an excellent foundation for careers in research, education, heritage, museums, and public history.
