COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1, you’ll explore the foundations of modern Europe and Britain through key historical and cultural developments. Modules like Emergence of Modern Europe and Society & Culture in Modern Britain, 1780–1914 provide a thematic overview of major events such as revolutions, urbanisation, and the evolution of class and gender dynamics. You'll also study the impact of 20th-century conflicts in Century of Conflict, analysing Europe’s transition from modernity to post-modernity. Alongside these historical studies, you’ll be introduced to media and cultural analysis through modules like Connecting with Audiences, Researching Television, and Sound Studies, where you’ll begin engaging with media texts and audience theory.In Year 2, your studies broaden and deepen. In Media: Past & Present, Where & When, you’ll investigate how modern media culture has developed historically, politically, and geographically, gaining a stronger context for contemporary media studies. The Researching Media & Culture module sharpens your methodological skills, training you in both qualitative and quantitative research methods. These modules help you prepare for more focused, independent research and critical engagement with both historical and media content.In your final year, you’ll consolidate your learning through independent work. The History & Media Dissertation allows you to research a topic that reflects your academic interests, drawing on the full range of skills developed throughout your degree. Working with the Past offers the chance to undertake a practical project based on primary sources, which could take the form of public or digital history. This final year emphasises research, analysis, and applied skills, preparing you for careers in heritage, media, education, or further study.
