COURSE CURRICULUM

This Graphic Design degree offers a structured, practice-led approach that blends creative development, technical skills, and critical understanding. In the first year, students are introduced to key principles of graphic design, including idea generation, communication strategies, and problem-solving. Modules such as Introduction to Graphic Design, Graphic Design Processes, and Graphic Design Projects (Fundamentals) focus on hands-on experience, encouraging experimentation across branding, advertising, editorial, and interaction design. Students also engage with the theoretical side through Contextual & Historical Studies and Visual Literacy, developing the ability to analyse imagery and understand the broader cultural significance of design.In the second year, the course becomes more specialised. Students deepen their technical expertise and personal direction with modules such as Specialist Graphic Design Projects in Typography and Technologies, tackling complex design challenges and exploring innovative uses of design tools. Negotiated Graphic Design Projects allows students to pursue individual interests and define their own creative path, while Critical & Professional Study helps them connect research and theory to their studio work. The Key Debates module introduces major contemporary and historical discussions within the design industry, fostering critical thinking and contextual awareness.The final year focuses on self-directed, professionally informed practice. Through Negotiated and Extended Studio Practice, students build a strong portfolio of refined work that showcases their individual voice and technical skills. These projects are supported by ongoing critical reflection and study. External Opportunities & Professional Practice encourages engagement with real-world contexts, pushing students to consider how their work operates beyond the academic setting. By the end of the course, students are prepared for careers in various areas of design, with the creative confidence and critical insight to adapt to the evolving industry landscape.
