COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of this fashion design program, you’ll build a strong foundation in both the technical and creative aspects of the discipline. Cut & Construction introduces you to fundamental skills in pattern cutting, garment construction, and responsible design thinking, encouraging the use of upcycled materials and inclusive design. Fashion Design Communication sharpens your ability to visually express ideas through hand and digital illustration, colour story development, fabric knowledge, and surface treatments. You'll learn to convey mood and narrative in your design work. Contextual Studies 1 grounds your practice in fashion history and theory, exploring how social, political, and cultural shifts have shaped clothing, from ancient times to modern fashion systems, including non-Western traditions. In Fashion Design Process, you’ll deepen your understanding of the design-to-garment process through research, experimentation, pattern cutting, and garment making, building confidence in creative development and sustainable thinking.Year 2 sees a shift toward industry-focused and identity-driven projects. In Tailoring, you’ll design and create a tailored jacket or coat while learning professional techniques and engaging with both heritage and global tailoring markets. Contextual Studies 2 develops your critical thinking, offering new theoretical frameworks to analyse fashion in relation to gender, sustainability, ethics, and globalisation. The Fashion Industry module helps you explore your place within the fashion landscape by building your brand identity and expanding your understanding of markets, trends, and consumers. Fashion Design Identity encourages individual expression through experimental research and design development, preparing you to define your aesthetic and approach as a designer.In the final year, you’ll bring together everything you’ve learned in a Major Project that defines your personal vision and career direction. You’ll carry out in-depth research, develop and produce final garments, and demonstrate refined technical and conceptual design skills. Contextual Studies 3 allows you to explore a research topic that supports your creative identity, culminating in a portfolio of written or visual work. Alternatively, you may choose an Industrial Placement Year to gain real-world experience. Finally, the Professional Portfolio module equips you to enter the fashion industry with a curated, industry-ready presentation of your work, articulating your individual strengths, target market, and professional aspirations.
