COURSE CURRICULUM

This Architecture degree equips students with a broad, practice-based and theoretical understanding of the discipline, preparing them for creative, technological, and socially responsible roles in architectural design. The course combines design studio work with studies in architectural history, theory, technology, materials, and professional practice, encouraging students to engage critically with both local and global challenges, including sustainability and cultural context.In year 1, students are introduced to fundamental principles of architectural design through the Design Projects modules. These explore the early phases of spatial design and teach essential tools and processes including analogue drawing, physical modelling, and digital representation using CAD and graphic software. Alongside this, Histories and Theories modules encourage critical engagement with how social, cultural, political, and environmental forces shape space and design practices across time and place. The Materials and Ecologies modules bring forward key environmental themes, introducing students to the concepts of ecology, biodiversity, climate impact, and the foundational structural and material considerations necessary for sustainable design.Year 2 advances students' design and technical capabilities. Architectural Design and Architectural Technology modules support the development of complex design proposals with an emphasis on materiality, structure, construction methods, and performance. Students also engage in Design Communication, where they refine their visualisation, technical drawing, and presentation skills. Architectural Context modules deepen students' awareness of place, history, and contemporary practice, while the Professional Studies module introduces them to legal, regulatory, and ethical dimensions of architectural practice.In the final year, students synthesise their learning in a comprehensive design thesis spread across Architectural Design 3.1 and 3.2. These modules challenge students to address real-world issues through detailed architectural proposals that consider environmental, technological, cultural, and societal impacts. Architectural Technology modules extend knowledge in material systems and advanced construction methods. Professional Studies 2 prepares students for the responsibilities and expectations of professional architectural work, including project management, legislation, and ethical practice. Architectural Context 3 continues to support students in situating their design work within a broader architectural and cultural framework.
