Leeds Beckett University (LBU), formerly known as Leeds Metropolitan University (LMU) and Leeds Polytechnic, is a public university located in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. Its history dates back to 1824 with the foundation of the Leeds Mechanics Institute. Over the years, the institution evolved, becoming Leeds College of Technology in 1927 and later merging with several other colleges in 1970 to form Leeds Polytechnic. It gained university status in 1992. In 2014, the university adopted its current name, Leeds Beckett University, after the Privy Council approved the change in 2013. The name honors Beckett Park, one of the university’s founding colleges, named after Ernest Beckett, 2nd Baron Grimthorpe.The university operates two campuses: City Campus, located in the heart of Leeds, and Headingley Campus, which offers a more tranquil, suburban environment. Leeds Beckett’s origins in science, art, literature, and technology have shaped its diverse academic offerings. The university has expanded significantly since its founding, becoming a prominent educational institution in the region.The university’s coat of arms, granted in 1993, symbolizes several aspects of its identity.
