COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Volcanology at Lancaster University combines theoretical knowledge, practical fieldwork, and analytical techniques to provide a comprehensive understanding of volcanic processes and their environmental impacts. The core modules focus on geological hazards, physical volcanology, local environmental challenges, and a master’s dissertation, equipping students with the skills to assess, analyse, and manage volcanic risks. Students gain hands-on experience through field courses, enabling them to study volcanic formations and hazards in real-world settings, particularly leveraging the volcanic landscapes of the Lake District. Complementing fieldwork, the program integrates laboratory and computational skills, including environmental data analysis, data assimilation, and geoinformatics, to evaluate volcanic phenomena and model hazard scenarios. Optional modules allow students to broaden their expertise in areas such as contaminated land and remediation, eco-innovation, environmental governance, environmental impact assessment, groundwater protection, and energy transition management.
