COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Hons Language Sciences degree provides a comprehensive exploration of language from foundational principles to advanced analysis, combining theoretical knowledge with practical skills. In the first year, students gain a grounding in the core components of language, including its structures, societal functions, and applications, while optional modules introduce complementary perspectives from psychology and English studies. In the second year, the focus expands to computational and data-driven approaches, enabling students to analyse language systematically through corpus linguistics, language acquisition, and the sounds and structures of languages worldwide. Optional modules provide opportunities to develop interdisciplinary skills, address global challenges, and enhance professional and collaborative capabilities. The third year offers advanced study in phonetics, phonology, and cognitive linguistics, alongside options that include forensic linguistics, psycholinguistics, pragmatics, and research-focused dissertations, allowing students to pursue specialised areas of interest. Throughout the degree, students engage with real-world applications of language study, critically examining its role in society, cognition, and technology.
