COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Hons Languages and Global Cultures program is designed to develop advanced language skills, cultural literacy, and global perspectives over four years of study. In the first year, students build foundational skills in one or more languages, progressing from beginner to intermediate levels while exploring global cultures and investigative approaches to cultural understanding. Year two advances language competence to higher intermediate levels and introduces planetary histories, providing context for human societies and global developments. By the third year, students engage in a Global Engagement Year, reaching CEFR B2/C1 or HSK 5/6 levels through immersive experiences, placements, or study abroad, allowing practical application of their language and intercultural knowledge. The final year focuses on achieving proficiency in chosen languages and completing independent projects that synthesize cultural and linguistic insights. Optional modules and discovery placements enable students to explore interdisciplinary themes, such as artistic expression, climate crisis, social justice, and global futures, enriching their understanding of the contemporary world. Across the course, students cultivate critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and leadership skills, preparing them for careers in diplomacy, international business, translation, education, and cultural consultancy. Graduates leave with linguistic expertise, cross-cultural competence, and the ability to engage effectively in complex global contexts.
