COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Sociology and Criminology program provides an in-depth exploration of the relationship between crime, justice, and society, equipping students with critical understanding of social structures, inequalities, and criminal behaviour. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge through core modules including Explaining Criminology, Exploring the Criminal Justice System, Framing Social Issues, Thinking Sociologically, and the Making Sense of Justice discovery module, introducing the key concepts, institutions, and theoretical frameworks that underpin criminology and sociology. The second year deepens this understanding with core modules such as Criminological Thought, Designing Sociological Research, Global Social Theory, and Research in Action, while optional modules allow students to examine contemporary issues including cybercrime, youth justice, organised crime, financial crime, policing, and social inequality, alongside discovery modules focusing on professional contexts, global challenges, and social impact. In the final year, students engage with advanced topics through core modules like Advanced Sociological Theories and Applications and Prisons, Punishment and Society, while optional modules provide opportunities to specialise in areas such as criminology dissertation, crime and media, gendered harm, green criminology, sexual offending, technology and social justice, and migration and inequality. Throughout the program, students develop research, analytical, and critical thinking skills, preparing them for careers in criminal justice, social policy, law enforcement, advocacy, research, and further postgraduate study.
