COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Philosophy and Politics program at Lancaster University offers a structured and integrated study of philosophical inquiry and political analysis, developing both critical thinking and a deep understanding of political systems. In the first year, students establish a foundation with core modules including Ethics, Knowledge and Reality, Political Philosophy, Political Theory in a Troubled World, Parties, Populism and Protest, and Thinking Globally, providing essential insights into moral reasoning, political ideas, and global contexts. The second year builds on this foundation with core modules such as Philosophy Guided Project, Theories of Power and the State, and Understanding Political Research, alongside a wide range of optional modules allowing students to explore areas such as 19th Century Philosophy, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Science, Global Capitalism, Politics of Policy, Global Superpowers, and Politics of the Global South. In the final year, students focus on advanced study and independent research through core modules including Comparative Political Philosophy, Critical Political Theory, the Philosophy Communication and Engagement Portfolio, and dissertations in both philosophy and politics. A variety of optional modules in areas such as Continental Philosophy, Democracy Under Pressure, Politics of Borders and Migration, Technology and Social Justice, and the Politics of the Middle East and Asia Pacific allow students to tailor their degree to specific interests. This interdisciplinary approach equips graduates with analytical, research, and communication skills, preparing them for careers in policy, law, government, international relations, journalism, and research.
