COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Hons Human Geography program provides a thorough understanding of the interactions between people, society, and the environment, equipping students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. In the first year, students develop foundational skills, exploring global human geography, societal structures, and research methods, while optional modules introduce political and policy contexts. The second year focuses on applying knowledge in practice, with core modules in human geography and optional pathways in cultural and social geography, environmental geography, political and economic geography, geospatial analysis, and development studies, including opportunities for immersive fieldwork such as the Sustainable Hebrides course. In the final year, students undertake an independent dissertation, consolidating research and analytical skills, while optional modules allow for specialized exploration in areas such as urban development, eco-innovation, food and agriculture, global transformation, socio-ecological governance, health geographies, political ecology, spatial data analysis, and field-based studies of urban futures. Throughout the degree, students gain a holistic understanding of human-environment relationships and are trained to analyze complex social, economic, and environmental issues. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in sectors such as environmental consultancy, urban planning, policy development, sustainable development, geospatial analysis, and related professional roles, contributing effectively to addressing contemporary global challenges.
