COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Hons Geography and Economics degree provides a comprehensive interdisciplinary education, combining the study of human and environmental geography with economic theory and practice. In the first year, students build foundational skills in geographical analysis, global human geography, research methods, and understanding society and place, alongside optional modules in macroeconomics and microeconomics. The second year deepens this knowledge, exploring development and political and economic geography, intermediate macroeconomics and microeconomics, and offering options in cultural and social geography, environmental economics, geographical data science, and field-based learning such as the Sustainable Hebrides course. In the final year, students address current economic and geographical issues and develop advanced skills in writing and research, while choosing from a wide range of optional modules tailored to their interests, including urban challenges, sustainable development, food and agriculture, health geographies, political ecology, and spatial data analysis. The program equips students with critical analytical, quantitative, and practical skills, enabling them to understand and respond to the complex interplay between society, economy, and the environment. Graduates are prepared for careers in sectors such as urban planning, environmental consultancy, public policy, energy management, international trade, and sustainable development, making them capable of addressing contemporary global challenges with a rigorous interdisciplinary perspective.
