COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Hons Film Studies program at Lancaster offers a comprehensive and immersive exploration of cinema, combining theoretical study with practical creative work. In the first year, students build a foundation in film analysis and history through core modules such as British Cinema and Introduction to Film Studies, alongside opportunities to explore the arts and identity. Optional modules allow students to engage with creative writing, literature, media, and culture, developing broader analytical and creative skills. In the second year, the focus expands to global cinema, examining forms, debates, and histories, while optional modules provide opportunities to study film genres, theory and aesthetics, screenwriting, short film production, and the social and cultural dimensions of media. Students also consider sustainability and global challenges within the creative industries. The final year emphasizes independent research and practical application through the Film Studies Independent Project, enabling students to develop their own creative voice and specialized expertise. Optional modules allow engagement with experimental cinema, documentary production, digital innovations, and contemporary film industries, alongside thematic studies such as gothic and science fiction, technology, social justice, and AI in media. Graduates emerge with a strong combination of analytical, practical, and creative skills, well-prepared for careers in film, media, creative industries, and further study.
