COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Hons English Literature and History program provides students with a comprehensive and interdisciplinary understanding of literary and historical studies, spanning a wide range of periods, genres, and themes. In the first year, students build a foundation in literature and history through core modules such as Literature in Time and Revolutions in History, while discovery modules like The Arts and Identity and Thinking Globally encourage critical reflection on culture and society. Optional modules allow exploration of the Early Modern World, the Medieval World, and World Literatures. The second year develops analytical and interpretive skills, with core modules including Critical Theory and Who Makes History? alongside optional modules covering American Literature, Victorian Literature, Early Modern Literature, Medieval Literature, and thematic topics such as body, mind and society, literary adaptation, information and misinformation, and cultural diversity. In the final year, students engage in in-depth study through a choice of English Literature and History dissertations, while optional modules allow further specialization in topics such as Gothic and Science Fiction, Romanticism, Modernism, Shakespeare, postcolonial literature, digital histories, and environmental and social studies. Discovery modules provide opportunities to explore contemporary global challenges, creative projects, and social issues. This combination of historical and literary study equips graduates with strong research, critical thinking, and communication skills, preparing them for careers in education, research, publishing, heritage, and cultural sectors.
