COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Hons English Language program offers students a comprehensive understanding of the English language, its variations, and its role in society across historical, social, and global contexts. In the first year, students build a foundation through modules such as English across Space and Time, English in Use, and Foundations of Language, while optional modules allow exploration of language in society, cognition, and world literatures. In the second year, the focus shifts to more specialized skills, including corpus linguistics, English grammar, and phonetics, alongside optional modules in computational approaches, language acquisition, discourse studies, professional communication, and applied contexts, enabling students to engage with language in practical and research-driven ways. In the final year, students consolidate their knowledge with core modules on language and social identities and language variation and change in English, while optional modules cover advanced phonetics, cognitive linguistics, forensic linguistics, pragmatics, language and media, psycholinguistics, and the dissertation process, allowing for in-depth research and analysis. The program emphasizes critical thinking, practical application, and research skills, preparing students for careers in education, communication, media, publishing, and linguistic research, while also equipping them to understand and analyze English in diverse cultural, technological, and professional settings.
