COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Hons English Language and Linguistics degree provides students with a comprehensive understanding of language, its structure, use, and societal impact. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through core modules exploring the history and evolution of English, fundamental principles of language, and its role in society and justice, alongside optional modules that examine English usage, cognition, linguistics applications, and world literatures. The second year deepens this understanding with a focus on corpus linguistics and language in society, while optional modules allow students to explore English grammar, phonetics, computational approaches, discourse studies, language acquisition, professional communication, and applied projects, fostering analytical and practical skills in language research. In the final year, students select from core and optional modules to focus on areas such as language variation, social identities, cognitive linguistics, advanced phonetics, forensic linguistics, language and media, psycholinguistics, pragmatics, and interdisciplinary discovery projects. The degree culminates in a dissertation, giving students the opportunity to conduct independent research and apply their knowledge in practical or theoretical contexts. Graduates leave with strong analytical, research, and communication skills, prepared for careers in education, research, communication, media, and other fields where advanced understanding of language and its societal impact is essential.
