COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Social Work (MSW) at Kingston University is structured over two years to provide a comprehensive foundation in professional social work practice. In Year 1, students focus on building essential knowledge and skills through core modules such as Applied Social Work Practice, which introduces practical approaches to working with individuals and communities, and Assessment and Intervention, which develops the ability to identify needs and implement effective support strategies. Human Development and the Social Environment provides insight into the psychological, social, and cultural factors influencing clients’ lives, while Legal, Ethical and Policy Frameworks for Social Work Practice explores the regulatory and ethical dimensions of professional practice. The First Placement and Readiness for Direct Practice modules offer supervised, hands-on experience, allowing students to apply theory in real-world settings and develop professional competence. Year 2 advances students’ expertise with modules designed to consolidate learning and support specialised practice. The Capstone Project allows students to undertake independent research or applied practice work, integrating knowledge and critical analysis. The Final Practice Placement and Specialist Interest Practice modules provide further opportunities for immersive, practical experience, enabling students to refine their professional skills in chosen areas of interest. Together, these modules equip graduates with the knowledge, practical experience, and professional readiness required to register with Social Work England and pursue a career in social work.
