COURSE CURRICULUM

The Learning Disabilities Nursing MSc at Kingston University is structured over two years to provide a comprehensive foundation in nursing practice, research, and specialist care for individuals with learning disabilities. In Year 1, students are introduced to the fundamental principles of nursing and healthcare across diverse client groups. Core modules such as Applied Life Sciences for Nursing Practice and The Fundamental Elements of Nursing Practice develop essential scientific knowledge and clinical competencies. Providing and Evaluating Evidence-Based Care with People with Learning Disabilities equips students with skills to deliver safe, effective, and person-centred care, while Practice Assessment Module Part 1 and Essential Skills for Nursing Practice focus on developing practical clinical abilities. Public Health further contextualises care within broader community and population health frameworks. Year 2 advances students’ knowledge, examining the analysis and application of research and the complexities of nursing at individual and organisational levels. Leading Care in Learning Disabilities Nursing develops leadership and management capabilities, while Practice Assessment Modules Part 2 and 3 provide opportunities for supervised, in-depth clinical practice. Delivering Complex Care for Learning Disabilities Nursing and Health and Wellbeing of People with Learning Disabilities enable students to manage complex needs, integrating theoretical understanding with practical skills. The program culminates in Becoming a Registrant, preparing graduates for professional practice as registered Learning Disabilities nurses with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
