COURSE CURRICULUM

The core modules of the Civil and Environmental Engineering MSc are designed to develop strong technical, analytical and professional skills aligned with current industry needs. Students begin by exploring digital technologies and construction modelling, gaining practical experience in modern design tools and data-driven engineering workflows. Project risk, quality and safety management develops an understanding of effective project delivery, regulatory compliance and best practice in health and safety. Structural design skills are strengthened through the study of concrete structures, focusing on safe, efficient and sustainable design in line with recognised codes. The program also includes a civil engineering group design project, which encourages teamwork, problem solving and the application of theoretical knowledge to real-world engineering challenges. Sustainable construction methods and materials introduce principles of environmental responsibility, resource efficiency and low-impact design. Coastal and flood defence systems provide insight into water-related infrastructure, climate resilience and risk mitigation strategies. Alongside these taught modules, students undertake a dissertation and research project development module that builds independent research, critical analysis and technical reporting skills. Together, these core modules prepare graduates to address complex civil and environmental engineering problems and to progress confidently into professional engineering roles.
