COURSE CURRICULUM

The modules of the Biomedical Science: Medical Microbiology MSc are designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of microorganisms and their role in human disease, alongside strong research and professional skills. Immunology and the Biology of Disease develops knowledge of immune system function and its interaction with pathogens, helping students understand how immune responses influence health and disease outcomes. Microbial Pathogenesis and Control of Infectious Disease focuses on the mechanisms by which microorganisms cause disease and the strategies used to prevent, control and manage infections, including public health approaches. Taxonomy of Microorganisms and Diagnosis of Infectious Disease introduces the classification, identification and diagnostic techniques used to detect and differentiate microbial pathogens in clinical settings. Research Techniques and Scientific Communication equips students with essential laboratory, analytical and communication skills, enabling them to design studies, analyse data and present scientific findings effectively. The Research Project allows students to undertake an independent, in-depth investigation in a specialised area of medical microbiology, applying theoretical knowledge to practical research questions. Together, these modules combine scientific theory, laboratory practice and research experience, preparing graduates for professional roles in biomedical laboratories, healthcare services, public health organisations and research environments, as well as for further academic study in medical microbiology and related disciplines.
