COURSE CURRICULUM

The MMus in Composing for Film and Television at Kingston University combines core and optional modules to provide a comprehensive and practical approach to music creation for visual media. Core modules include Major Project, which allows students to develop an extensive, self-directed composition project, demonstrating creative and technical mastery. Score and Screen focuses on composing music that complements and enhances visual storytelling, teaching students how to align musical ideas with narrative, mood and character development. Researching Music develops critical and analytical skills, enabling students to investigate musical practices, historical context and contemporary trends relevant to film and television composition. Techniques and Technology for Composing for Film and Television provides practical training in digital audio workstations, sound design, recording and production techniques, ensuring students can realise their creative ideas using professional tools. Optional modules offer opportunities to broaden skills and perspectives, including Advanced Production of Popular Music and Composing and Marketing Popular Music, which focus on contemporary music creation and industry practices. Modules such as Critical Reflection on Musical Performance and Performance Studies encourage self-evaluation and development of performance skills, while International Music Education and Constructing Music Education in the UK explore educational contexts and cultural perspectives. Together, these modules equip students with the technical, creative and professional expertise to succeed as composers, producers or collaborators within the film, television and wider music industries.
