COURSE CURRICULUM

The Creative Writing MFA at Kingston University is structured around a combination of core modules that provide both rigorous creative practice and critical engagement with contemporary writing. The MFA Dissertation forms the central component, allowing students to develop a substantial, self-directed work of original fiction, poetry, or creative non-fiction, demonstrating technical skill, artistic vision, and professional readiness. Special Study: Workshop in Popular Genre Writing enables students to explore and experiment with specific genres, developing versatility and understanding of commercial and creative demands in writing for contemporary audiences. Writing the Contemporary encourages critical engagement with current literary trends, social contexts, and cultural influences, helping students situate their work within modern writing practices. Ten Critical Challenges for Creative Writers introduces complex creative and conceptual exercises designed to stretch technical and imaginative abilities, fostering problem-solving, adaptability, and experimentation in the craft of writing. Writers’ Workshop provides a collaborative environment where students share work, receive constructive feedback, and refine their writing under the guidance of experienced mentors and peers. Together, these modules combine intensive practice, reflective learning, and critical analysis, equipping students with the creative, intellectual, and professional skills needed to produce publishable work, develop a distinctive authorial voice, and pursue successful careers as writers, editors, or literary professionals.
