COURSE CURRICULUM

The Game Development (Design) MA provides students with hands-on experience in designing and creating computer games both individually and as part of collaborative teams, reflecting professional industry environments. Students work with industry-standard production management tools and techniques, developing the ability to plan, manage and deliver projects on time. The course encourages the creation of vertical-slice prototypes using emerging technologies such as virtual and augmented reality, allowing students to experiment with innovative forms of gameplay and interaction. Core modules include Game Design, which develops fundamental and advanced design principles, Digital Studio Practice, which focuses on collaborative workflows, and Connected Games Development, which explores networked and interactive experiences. The Digital Media Final Project allows students to produce a substantial piece of work that demonstrates creative, technical and professional skills. Students also develop a strong professional presence, learning how to present their work effectively through portfolios and personal branding to potential employers. Optional modules, subject to demand, include Design Thinking Theory and Practice and Character Animation for Film and Games, enabling further specialisation. Opportunities for paid placements are available, subject to successful completion of all modules at first attempt, with support provided by a dedicated placement team. Overall, the program prepares graduates for professional roles in the games and interactive media industries.
