COURSE CURRICULUM

The core and optional modules of the Art Business MA are designed to provide a thorough understanding of the art market alongside practical and professional skills. History of the Art Market introduces students to the development of art markets over time, exploring how historical, cultural and economic factors have shaped the way art is produced, valued and traded today. Object Analysis and Appraisal focuses on developing the ability to critically examine artworks and objects, building skills in evaluation, authentication and understanding artistic and material qualities. Business and Art explores the relationship between creative practice and commercial activity, examining management, marketing, legal and financial considerations within the art world. The Major Project allows students to undertake an in-depth piece of independent work, integrating research and practical application in an area aligned with their interests and career goals. In addition to the core modules, the optional Professional Placement provides valuable real-world experience, enabling students to apply their learning in a professional art business environment and gain insight into industry practices. Together, these modules offer a balanced combination of historical knowledge, critical analysis and applied business skills, preparing graduates for diverse roles across galleries, auction houses, cultural organisations and the wider global art market.
