COURSE CURRICULUM

The core modules of the MA in Animation are designed to support the development of both creative practice and critical understanding through a studio-based and research-informed approach. Studio: Critical Making for Animation introduces students to experimental methods and processes, encouraging them to explore animation through hands-on practice while engaging with critical reflection and contemporary debates. Reading: Critical Positions develops analytical and theoretical skills by examining key texts, ideas and perspectives that inform animation and wider creative practices. Studio: Situating Practice for Animation focuses on helping students contextualise their work within cultural, historical and professional frameworks, enabling them to refine their creative identity and understand their position within the field. Presentation: Future Directions supports students in articulating their ideas, research and creative outcomes clearly and confidently, while also encouraging forward-thinking reflection on potential career pathways and future developments in animation. Studio: Extended Research Project for Animation allows students to undertake an in-depth, self-directed project that integrates practice and research, demonstrating their creative, technical and critical abilities. Together, these modules provide a coherent structure that balances experimentation, theory and professional development, enabling students to produce original work and graduate with a strong conceptual foundation and practical skill set suited to diverse creative and professional environments.
