COURSE CURRICULUM

The Psychology with Counselling BSc (Hons) is structured across three years to gradually develop theoretical understanding, research competence, and applied counselling skills. In the first year, students gain a broad foundation in psychological science by exploring key theories, historical perspectives, contemporary issues, and concepts of identity. Modules such as Introduction to Psychology, Psychology Research Methods 1, Approaches and Professional Skills in Psychology, and Applying Psychology in the Real World introduce students to core areas of psychology, professional skills, and the fundamentals of psychological research and analysis. In the second year, the focus shifts to understanding the relationship between brain function, cognition, and behaviour, alongside social and developmental influences on human experience. Students are also introduced to counselling and psychotherapy in practice, developing practical skills through case studies and applied learning. Core modules include Brain, Behaviour and Cognition, Social and Developmental Psychology, Introduction to Counselling and Psychotherapy in Practice, and Psychology Research Methods 2. In the final year, students undertake an independent research project on a chosen topic and explore mental health issues in relation to counselling and psychotherapy across the lifespan. Modules such as Psychology Research Project, Personal Development and Therapeutic Process, Mental Health in Counselling and Psychotherapy, Personality and Individual Differences, and Future Skills Apply prepare students for further training, employment, and professional development in psychology and counselling-related careers.
