COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Data Science at Heriot-Watt University is a two-year program designed to provide students with the technical expertise required to succeed in data-intensive roles across a wide range of industries. In the first year, students build a solid foundation in computing and analytical skills through mandatory courses in software engineering, databases, knowledge management, mathematical tools for data science, advanced software engineering, project management, sociotechnical and soft systems, and e-commerce technology. These modules equip students with the skills necessary to design, manage, and analyse complex information systems. In the second year, the focus shifts to advanced data science techniques, including data mining, machine learning, statistical modelling, big data management, data visualisation, and analytics, alongside research methods and project planning. Optional courses such as biologically inspired computation, computer network security, industrial programming, information systems methodologies, digital and knowledge economy, data engineering pipelines, distributed and parallel technologies, and natural language processing allow students to tailor their learning to specific interests and career goals. The program culminates in a substantial Masters project and dissertation, providing practical experience in applying data science methods to real-world problems. Graduates leave equipped to transform raw data into actionable insights, develop data-driven solutions, and pursue careers as data scientists, analysts, engineers, or technical specialists.
