COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Computing program at Heriot-Watt University spans two years and combines a comprehensive mix of theoretical knowledge and practical skills to prepare students for a wide range of careers in computing. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge in software engineering, advanced programming, artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, and networking, alongside options such as databases, e-commerce, and interaction design to tailor their learning. This stage ensures students gain the essential technical and analytical skills needed for advanced study. In the second year, the focus shifts to more specialised computing and cybersecurity topics, including computer network security, industrial programming, intelligent robotics, and systems programming, with optional courses in areas such as biologically inspired computation, computer graphics, advanced network security, big data management, digital forensics, and games programming. Project management and research methods are also integrated to develop professional and research competencies. The program concludes with a Masters Project and Dissertation, allowing students to apply their knowledge to solve real-world computing challenges through independent research. This combination of core modules, optional specialisations, and practical project work equips graduates with the expertise to pursue careers in software development, cybersecurity, AI, data analytics, and other computing-related roles across diverse industries, while also preparing them for further research or advanced technical positions.
