COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Robotics program at Heriot-Watt University provides comprehensive training in robotics and autonomous systems, combining theoretical knowledge with practical and research-focused skills. In September, students complete mandatory modules in Robotics Systems Science and Intelligent Robotics, which provide a foundation in the principles of robotic systems, control, and intelligent behaviour. Optional modules allow students to explore specialised areas such as Embedded Systems, Optimisation and Deep Learning for Imaging and Vision, Biologically Inspired Computation, Data Mining and Machine Learning, Internet of Things, and Human-Robot Interaction, enabling tailored learning based on individual interests. In January, core modules include Machine Vision and Robotic Mechanical Systems, providing advanced training in robot perception, kinematics, and mechanical design. Optional modules in Embedded Software, Critical Analysis and Research Preparation, Conversational Agents and Spoken Language Processing, Image Processing, Systems Thinking and Analysis, Optimisation and Deep Learning for Imaging and Vision II, and Research Methods and Project Planning further equip students with applied and analytical skills relevant to modern robotics applications. In May, students complete a major MSc Project or Masters Project and Dissertation, integrating learning across the program and applying it to real-world or research-based robotics challenges. The program develops technical expertise, programming skills, and analytical and problem-solving abilities, preparing graduates for careers in industrial robotics, research, or academic positions in robotics and autonomous systems worldwide.
