COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Mathematics program at Heriot-Watt University provides students with a rigorous foundation in both theoretical and applied mathematics, preparing them for advanced careers in academia, research, and industry. In September, students complete the mandatory module Modelling and Tools, which introduces essential techniques for mathematical modelling and computational analysis. A wide range of optional modules, including Mathematical Ecology, Fluid Mechanics, Functional Analysis, Optimisation, Modelling and Simulation in the Life Sciences, Numerical ODEs, Topology, and Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics, allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests and develop expertise in diverse areas. In January, core learning continues with Partial Differential Equations, providing the analytical framework for modelling complex systems, while optional modules such as Mathematical Biology and Medicine, Data Assimilation, Lie Groups and Lie Algebra, Numerical Analysis (PDEs), Geometry, Artificial Intelligence, and Quantum Theory offer further opportunities for specialisation in both theoretical and applied mathematics. The program culminates in May with a Masters Project and Dissertation, where students undertake an independent research project, applying mathematical concepts and computational methods to real-world or theoretical problems. Through this combination of coursework and research, students develop advanced analytical, problem-solving, and transferable skills, including communication, critical thinking, and computational proficiency, equipping them for professional careers or further study in mathematics and related disciplines.
