COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Mathematical Biology, Ecology and Medicine offers an advanced curriculum designed to equip students with the mathematical and computational skills needed to address complex problems in the life sciences. In September, students begin with mandatory modules in Mathematical Ecology, Modelling and Simulation in the Life Sciences, and Modelling and Tools, which provide a foundation in ecological theory, mathematical modelling, and computational techniques. Optional modules in the same semester, including Optimisation, Numerical ODEs, and Statistical Methods, allow students to specialise in specific analytical approaches. In January, core modules such as Mathematical Biology and Medicine and Data Assimilation introduce applications of mathematics in medical and biological research, alongside methods for integrating data into predictive models. Additional optional modules, including Artificial Intelligence, Partial Differential Equations, Numerical Analysis (PDEs), and Bayesian Inference and Computational Methods, offer further opportunities to develop expertise in advanced modelling and computational techniques. The program culminates in May with a Masters Project and Dissertation, where students conduct an independent research project, applying theoretical and practical knowledge to real-world challenges in biology, medicine, or ecology. Through this combination of rigorous coursework and research experience, students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills, preparing them for careers in academia, research institutions, or industry, and enabling them to contribute to interdisciplinary scientific challenges in mathematical biology, ecology, and medicine.
