COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc International Marine Science program provides a comprehensive and flexible curriculum that equips students with essential knowledge and practical skills in marine and environmental science. In September, students begin with mandatory modules in Applied Research Design and Analysis and Oceanography, which establish core scientific and analytical skills for studying marine systems. A wide range of optional modules, including Environmental Processes, Climate Change, Sustainability and Adaptation, Introduction to Marine Planning, Marine Renewable Energy Technology, Marine Resources and Sustainability, Diversity of Marine Organisms, Marine Ecotoxicology, Transition Engineering, and Fisheries Sustainability and Gear Technology, allows students to specialise in topics aligned with their interests and career goals. In January, students complete the mandatory GIS for Marine and Environmental Scientists module, gaining spatial analysis and mapping skills widely applied in marine research and management. Additional optional modules such as Marine Vertebrate Ecology and Conservation, Environmental Evidence Synthesis, Tropical and Coral Reefs Monitoring and Management, Marine Environmental Monitoring, Energy Transition Lab, Equity, Economics and Ecosystems under Pressure, Science Communication, Renewable Technology Commercialisation, and Practical Skills in Marine Surveying provide further technical depth and practical experience. The program culminates in May with the ILES Environment Dissertation, an independent research project that integrates knowledge and skills acquired throughout the year. Collectively, the modules prepare graduates for careers in marine research, environmental management, conservation, policy, and related professional sectors worldwide.
