COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Energy with Entrepreneurship at Heriot-Watt University is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of energy technologies while developing entrepreneurial and business skills. The program combines technical, scientific, and commercial knowledge to equip students to address current and future challenges in the energy sector. In the first semester, students engage with foundational energy concepts and can select optional modules such as renewable energy technologies, electrical power systems, computational fluid dynamics with heat transfer, process intensification, climate change, and economics of renewable energy, allowing them to tailor their learning to specific interests. The January semester focuses on developing business acumen alongside technical expertise, including mandatory courses in technology futures, business strategy, critical analysis, and business start-up, with optional courses covering energy transition, sustainable processing, distributed generation, low carbon building design, energy systems, and quality management. Throughout the program, students gain insight into the broader political, social, and economic factors influencing energy production, distribution, and consumption, with an emphasis on sustainability and innovation. The final component, the master’s dissertation, allows students to apply their knowledge to an in-depth research project, integrating technical and entrepreneurial approaches. This combination of scientific expertise, business strategy, and innovation prepares graduates for impactful careers in energy industries, policy-making, and entrepreneurial ventures globally.
