COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Economics, Banking and Finance program at Heriot-Watt University offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare students for careers in finance, banking, economics, and related sectors. In the September semester, students undertake mandatory courses such as International Banking and Money Markets, which provide a strong foundation in global financial systems. Optional courses allow for tailored learning, covering areas including International Finance, Advanced Economic Policy, Corporate Finance, Capital Markets, Corporate Governance and Sustainability, and Principles of Environmental and Energy Economics. In the January semester, mandatory courses include Emerging Financial Markets and International Banking Institutions and Regulatory Frameworks, equipping students with knowledge of evolving financial systems and regulatory practices. Optional courses in this semester allow further specialisation in Development Economics, Econometric Methods for Economic Research, Derivatives, and Empirical Financial Modelling, enabling students to gain practical analytical and quantitative skills. The program culminates in a May dissertation, allowing students to conduct independent, original research in a topic of their choice, applying the theoretical and practical knowledge gained throughout the course.
