COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Climate Change: Managing the Marine Environment program combines mandatory and optional courses to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of marine ecosystems and the impacts of climate change. In the September semester, students undertake mandatory courses such as Applied Research Design and Analysis, Marine Resources and Sustainability, and Climate Change, Sustainability and Adaptation, which establish a solid foundation in scientific research, marine resource management, and sustainability principles. Optional courses allow students to explore specific areas such as Environmental Processes, Economics of Renewable Energy, Marine Planning, Oceanography, Transition Engineering for Net Zero, Diversity of Marine Organisms, Fisheries Sustainability, and Marine Ecotoxicology, giving flexibility to tailor their studies to individual interests and career goals. In the January semester, mandatory courses include GIS for Marine and Environmental Scientists and Marine Environmental Monitoring, providing essential technical skills in spatial analysis and field-based environmental assessment. Optional courses cover specialized topics such as Marine Vertebrate Ecology and Conservation, Science Communication and Engagement, Tropical and Coral Reef Management, Ecosystem Economics under Pressure, Energy Transition Lab, and Practical Skills in Marine Surveying, enhancing students’ applied expertise. The program concludes with the mandatory ILES Environment Dissertation in May, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge and practical skills to an independent research project, preparing graduates for careers in marine science, environmental management, and policy-focused roles in academia, industry, government, and non-governmental organisations.
