COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Applied Mathematical Sciences at Heriot-Watt University is structured to provide a comprehensive and flexible learning experience, combining core courses with optional modules and a final research project. In the first semester, students take mandatory courses such as Modelling and Tools, which form the foundation for mathematical problem-solving and analytical thinking. Alongside this, a variety of optional courses allow students to tailor their learning to their interests, including Mathematical Ecology, Fluid Mechanics, Optimisation, Modelling and Simulation in the Life Sciences, Numerical ODEs, and Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics. In the second semester, students continue with a similarly flexible approach, selecting from optional courses such as Mathematical Biology and Medicine, Data Assimilation, Partial Differential Equations, Numerical Analysis (PDEs), and Artificial Intelligence, ensuring exposure to both applied and theoretical aspects of modern mathematics. This combination of courses equips students with the skills to tackle complex challenges across diverse scientific and industrial contexts. The program concludes with a three-month Masters Project and Dissertation during the summer, allowing students to apply their learned knowledge to a substantial research problem, often in collaboration with industry or academic partners. By the end of the MSc, graduates possess advanced analytical, modelling, and computational skills, making them highly employable in research, industry, and data-driven careers.
