COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Applied Mathematical Sciences with Climate and Environmental Modelling is structured to provide students with both a strong theoretical foundation and practical expertise in applying mathematical techniques to climate and environmental challenges. In the first semester, students engage in core courses such as Mathematical Ecology, Modelling and Simulation in the Life Sciences, and Modelling and Tools, which establish essential skills for building and analysing models of complex environmental systems. Optional courses allow further exploration of topics like Climate Change, Sustainability and Adaptation, Optimisation, and Statistical Methods, providing flexibility to tailor learning to individual interests. In the second semester, students study Data Assimilation as a mandatory course, equipping them with techniques for integrating real-world data into models, while optional courses include Mathematical Biology and Medicine, Partial Differential Equations, Numerical Analysis, Artificial Intelligence, and Bayesian Inference & Computational Methods. These courses develop advanced analytical, computational, and statistical capabilities essential for modelling environmental phenomena and climate systems. The program culminates in a research-based Masters Project and Dissertation during the final term, offering an opportunity to apply acquired knowledge to practical problems, conduct independent research, and contribute solutions to pressing climate and sustainability challenges. Graduates are prepared for careers in environmental research, climate modelling, policy advisory roles, and industries requiring sophisticated quantitative and modelling expertise.
