COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Medicinal Chemistry program provides a comprehensive four-year curriculum designed to equip students with both fundamental and advanced knowledge in chemistry and its application to drug discovery and pharmaceutical sciences. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in chemistry, biology, and mathematics through courses covering chemical principles, applications, reactivity, and introductory biology, alongside the development of analytical and problem-solving skills. The second year focuses on deeper chemical understanding, including atomic and molecular structure, chemical bonding, thermodynamics, kinetics, spectroscopy, and organic synthesis, while introducing drug targeting and microbiology. In the third year, students advance into organometallic chemistry, multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, pharmaceutical chemistry, organic reactions, and principles of drug discovery and development, with optional modules in biotechnology, molecular biology, pathobiology, and medical microbiology to expand specialized knowledge. The final year emphasizes advanced pharmacology, human diseases, therapeutic interventions, and modern inorganic and organic chemistry, culminating in an individual chemistry dissertation project that integrates research, critical analysis, and practical laboratory skills. Throughout the program, students develop technical expertise, experimental design capabilities, data interpretation skills, and scientific communication proficiency. Graduates emerge well-prepared for careers in pharmaceutical research, drug development, and biotechnology, or for further study at MSc and PhD levels, combining theoretical knowledge with practical, industry-relevant experience to address challenges in modern medicinal chemistry.
