COURSE CURRICULUM

The Equitation Science offers students a comprehensive and research-led approach to understanding horse and rider performance, welfare, and training. Across 180 credits, the program combines theoretical learning, practical application, and independent research to equip graduates with advanced skills for professional practice. Key modules include Applied Equine Learning and Cognition, which examines the latest developments in equine learning and cognition, and Horse-Human Interactions, exploring the benefits and welfare considerations of the horse-human dyad. One Welfare in Equestrian Training and Management focuses on assessing both horse and human welfare in equestrian contexts, while modules such as Applied Equine Exercise Physiology and Advances in Equestrian Biomechanics provide practical insight into performance, physiology, and movement. Investigating Equestrian Research and the Research Process prepare students to design, conduct, and evaluate high-quality research projects, culminating in a Postgraduate Dissertation supported by an individual supervisor. Additional modules, including Equine Behaviour, Rider Performance, Equine Management for Optimal Performance and Welfare, Developing a Sustainable Equine Industry, and Postgraduate Independent Study, enable students to explore welfare, sustainability, training, and management issues in depth. The course is delivered through a combination of campus-based and online learning, integrating seminars, conferences, and real-world projects to develop critical analysis, applied skills, and evidence-based decision-making for careers in equitation science, welfare, and industry leadership.
