COURSE CURRICULUM

The Applied Equine Science program offers a combination of compulsory and optional modules designed to provide advanced knowledge and practical expertise across equine science, performance, and welfare. Core modules include Investigating Equestrian Research, where students analyze current research and attend seminars and conferences, and Equine Management for Optimal Performance and Welfare, which develops evaluative skills to consider ethical and practical aspects of horse management. Developing a Sustainable Equine Industry focuses on critical examination of industry practices and stakeholder responsibilities in relation to global sustainability. The Postgraduate Dissertation allows students to undertake an independent research project under supervision, demonstrating originality and applied research skills. Optional modules enable students to tailor their learning to their interests and career goals, including Applied Equine Exercise Physiology, which explores training and physiological adaptations across equestrian disciplines, and Therapy and Rehabilitation of the Equine Athlete, which evaluates therapeutic techniques for sports horses. Rider Performance examines the biomechanical and physiological demands on riders, while Equine Behaviour provides insights into natural and domestic behaviour and learning theory. Advances in Equestrian Biomechanics applies mechanical principles to improve equestrian performance. All modules are delivered in English across three trimesters, and successful completion awards academic credits that contribute to the overall MSc qualification, supporting a final classification of pass, merit, or distinction.
