COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sport and Exercise Science MRes program enables students to progress their careers through a substantial piece of independent postgraduate research, offering the opportunity to contribute new knowledge to their chosen field. Students can focus on applied sport sciences, performance analysis, physical activity and wellbeing, physical education, sports coaching, or strength and conditioning, with research driven by employers, industry partners, or high-performance sports teams and athletes on campus. The program equips students with advanced research skills, including critical evaluation, research design, and data analysis, and supports them in applying empirical thinking to practical challenges. Students complete 180 credits through compulsory modules, such as The Research Process, Applying Sport and Exercise Research, and the Extended Postgraduate Research Project, alongside 45 credits of optional modules to complement their research or develop applied skills. Optional modules include Applied Practice in Strength and Conditioning, Conditioning for Physical Performance, Contemporary Issues in Performance Analysis, Deconstructing and Reconstructing Coaching Practice, Digital Media and Marketing, High Performing Environments, Performance Profiling and Testing, Planning and Monitoring for Athletic Training, Postgraduate Industry Placement Experience, and Strategic Leadership in Sports Management. Industry placements and practical experiences provide real-world application of research and coaching theory. Overall, the program integrates independent research, applied practice, and professional development, preparing graduates to lead, innovate, and influence practice across sport, exercise, and high-performance environments.
