COURSE CURRICULUM

This degree is designed to develop advanced research expertise in animal science through a combination of lectures, seminars, and individual supervision, enabling students to build both theoretical knowledge and practical skills for academic and professional progression. Students gain the ability to critically evaluate research, design robust studies, and perform accurate statistical analysis, applying scientific thinking to their own independent research projects. The course also explores key challenges in animal welfare science, with recent topics including canine hydrotherapy, meat production, and pet food safety. Learners are encouraged to engage with academic journals, attend industry conferences, and present or publish their findings. Core modules such as The Research Process, Applied Research Practice, and the Extended Postgraduate Research Project provide a strong foundation in methodology, data analysis, and scientific communication, culminating in a substantial independent research project. Additional modules focus on contemporary and advanced animal welfare science, examining legislation, ethics, sentience, and assessment methods. Students can tailor their studies by selecting optional modules across animal, agriculture, and equine fields, covering areas such as behaviour, policy, regulation, and industry practices.
