COURSE CURRICULUM

The MRes in Animal Science (Livestock) is designed to develop advanced research expertise and practical skills, preparing students to contribute to scientific knowledge and real-world practice. The program combines taught lectures, seminars, and one-to-one sessions to build theoretical understanding and applied expertise in livestock production, welfare, sustainability, and resource management. Students will develop critical skills in research design, data analysis, and scientific evaluation, enabling them to apply contemporary scientific thinking to their chosen research topic. Core modules include the Extended Postgraduate Research Project, allowing students to design and undertake a significant research project focused on livestock science, and Applied Research Practice, which guides students through literature review, methodology, data analysis, and dissemination of findings. Additional compulsory modules such as Applied Animal Welfare Assessment and Contemporary Issues in Animal Welfare Science provide students with the tools to assess and improve welfare in real-world contexts, integrating ethical frameworks and scientific evidence. Sustainable Resource Management in Land-Based Industries emphasizes efficient and responsible use of natural, manufactured, and human resources to ensure viability and environmental stewardship. Students are encouraged to engage with academic journals, industry conferences, and opportunities to present or publish research. Optional modules allow learners to tailor their studies to specific career goals, ensuring the program develops highly skilled, research-informed professionals capable of advancing livestock science and applied industry practice.
