COURSE CURRICULUM

The Zoology degree with Foundation Year is structured to progressively build students’ scientific knowledge, practical skills, and research abilities across four years. In the first year, students develop essential academic and scientific foundations, focusing on biological principles, animal care, research skills, and professional development. The second year expands on this by exploring animal physiology, genetics, biodiversity, ecology, behaviour, and health, while also developing laboratory and field skills such as wildlife surveying and species identification. In the third year, students engage with real-world environmental and conservation challenges, studying behavioural ecology, conservation biology, and research methods, alongside participating in field courses that may include trips to locations such as South Africa, Wales, or local UK sites. Optional modules and industry experience further enhance practical understanding. The final year focuses on advanced conservation topics, including biodiversity loss and wildlife management in captivity, as well as professional skill development for careers in zoology. A major component is the independent research dissertation, often conducted with industry partners, allowing students to address real-world issues and potentially present or publish their work. Overall, the course combines theory, fieldwork, and research to prepare graduates for careers in conservation, research, and the wider animal and environmental sectors.
