COURSE CURRICULUM

The Physical Education and School Sport (with Foundation Year) BSc (Hons) program is designed to develop students into skilled educators and practitioners in physical education and school sport. The foundation year provides a broad introduction to academic writing, scientific principles underpinning physical activity, and professional development, preparing students for undergraduate study and a career in teaching. In the second year, students focus on understanding the national curriculum, teaching and coaching techniques, exercise physiology, sports psychology, strength and conditioning, and research and data skills, while gaining hands-on experience through industry-focused modules and practical teaching opportunities. The third year allows students to tailor their learning to different Key Stages, advance their teaching practice through placements, and explore pedagogical concepts, physical literacy, and school sport development, alongside applied research in sport and exercise science. Optional modules such as community sport, independent reports, and study trips further broaden practical experience. In the final year, students refine their teaching and coaching skills, complete a substantial dissertation project, and explore professional development opportunities, including preparing for postgraduate teacher training. Optional modules allow further specialization in high performing teams, youth athlete development, and contemporary issues in sport and education. Overall, the program integrates theory, research, and practical experience, preparing graduates for careers in teaching, coaching, school sport development, and related roles supporting youth health and physical literacy.
